What is your skate name?

Mary Marvel

What is the significance of your skate name and number?

My skate name is a DC (ironic huh?) comic superhero from the 1940's.The name literally fell in my lap one afternoon spent at the comic book store. She was known for her courage, strength, speed, power and stamina....and of course because she had super awesome hair.

The number 23 has always shared significance in my life since I was a wee one. It seems to follow me around wherever I go!

How long have you been skating?

It will be 2 years on October 7th.

How did you get started playing roller derby?

My work was the grocery store literally right across from RollerCon 2009; I noticed these girls shopping with their numbers and witty names printed on their backs. Their style and demeanor was striking to me. My brothers' girlfriend at the time worked with a derby girl so she gave me the inside scoop every so often and eased me into going to newbie practice. The rest is history!

What is your greatest derby achievement so far?

Making the top 10 skater roster for our Travel Team. I worked really hard to earn that position and I can't wait to see this season's new crop of skaters .Also! Winning the Sin City Rollergirls' first Championship with my home team this last season was an amazing achievement as well.

Do you have a derby crush? Who is it?

Psycho Babble from Rocky Mountain Rollergirls for sure, Scald Eagle from Rose City puts a twinkle in my eye, too.

What is your favorite part of skating with Sin City Rollergirls?

Of course, the community revolving around this league. I use to be really shy, but once I joined our Travel Team I've learned to communicate better with everyone and it has paid off immensely. You learn about so many personalities and humor that it rounds you off as a person too. Win, win.

What is your favorite derby position?

I personally LOVE blocking, but I feel it's essential to be a dynamic player for my team and myself, so now I'm migrating to the pivot position, and I am loving it!

What is your day job?

I work with a Natural and Organic Grocer, where I stock vitamins, herbs and body care all day. I love it....most of the time haha.

Tell us one thing about yourself that we wouldn't expect...

I play the meanest air bass. Ever.

Who is the biggest influence in your life?

Mom and Dad. Tip my hat off to the family and life they built for my brothers and I.

What is the strangest thing in your purse or wallet right now?

Gosh, what isn't strange in my purse right now....
