What is the significance of your skate name and number?
It took me forever to pick a derby name. I must have rejected 50 names in the process of deciding, but one day when I was at work (I work at an animal hospital) I was doing paperwork and saw a cat named Dirty McGerty and I just knew that had to be my name. And I love my name, I wouldn't change it for anything. My number is a little more boring, I just like the number 13, I have it tattooed on me in a few spots. I really wanted to be number 11 because that was my soccer number all through school, but 13 was my second choice.
How did you get started playing roller derby?
My sister actually started a league in Burlington, VT and she was always sending pictures and merch and videos and it just looked like so much fun. She kept asking if I had looked into skating down here and I kept putting it off because of my job and my kids, but I went to a few scrimmages when they were still being held at the park. Finally in 2009 I just couldn't wait anymore and I decided to go out to newbie practice. I was not one of the skaters who was hooked from day one, I actually left for a few months then came back to it then left again and came back, but now I can't imagine my life without it!
How long have you been skating?
I joined SCRG in October of 2009, but like I said, I had periods where I would be gone for a few months at a time and I wasn't really involved. I'd say I've been skating continuously since January of 2011.
What is your favorite derby position?
I'm a blocker. I like playing in the back of the pack as a two person defense. When I first started I thought I wanted to be a jammer, but I get stage fright with that much pressure on me!
What is your greatest derby achievement so far?
I feel like playing derby is a culmination of a lot of little achievements, like the first time you time a hit perfectly or when something clicks and you just understand a new move. But outside of actually playing, my greatest achievement is definitely being voted in as General Manager of SCRG. Just knowing that my league trusts me that much and has the confidence in me to speak for them is such a great feeling.
What is your favorite part of skating with Sin City Rollergirls?
This is a hard one. There are so many great things about skating. Every time I put my skates on I feel strong and confident. When you're skating with all these amazing women, something rubs off on you and you can help but feel like you're pretty freaking awesome too. I had to rewrite this 4 times before I could narrow down my answer, that's how great SCRG is!
Do you have a derby crush? Who is it?
I did not have a derby crush until I went to Championships in Denver. After watching those bouts I fell in love with Hockey Honey's blocking ability. Her containment and frontal blocking were better than anything I've ever seen before. I'd give my left hand to be half as effective as her. Amanda Jamitinya is another one I couldn't stop watching that weekend. She had a lot of penalties, but when she was playing clean it was really impressive to watch.
What is your day job?
I work at Siena Animal Hospital. I do a little bit of everything there; I work the front desk, help the technicians, and work in kennels. I absolutely love animals so my job is pretty awesome. 🙂
Who is the biggest influence in your life?
This is a hard question too... I have to say my sister. As long as I can remember she's done whatever she wanted and succeeded at it. She has never followed the "normal" path and just seeing that someone could be a responsible adult and still do things the way they wanted to was pretty impressive to me.
What is the strangest thing in your purse or wallet right now?
Normally my bag is packed full of stuff, but since I just got back from vacation it's fairly empty. I guess the strangest thing is a Las Vegas dice bottle opener. I also have a rollerskate necklace that Lisa Carr gave me that I keep forgetting to hang up on my car mirror. Oh, and my bag of "hippie food" which is almonds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds (I never leave home without that!).
Tell us one thing about yourself that we wouldn't expect...
I asked my friend to answer this question for me and she said people don't expect me to be nice, but I am. I'm actually really shy and hate being in big groups of people. I get really bad stage fright if I have to talk in front of people. I think my shyness comes across as me being mean or unfriendly, but once you get to know me I'm actually pretty sweet!
