CommandHer ‘n Chief – 1893
CommandHer ‘n Chief, 1893
What is the significance of your name and number?
I served 12 years in the US Navy. My rank at discharge was Chief Petty Officer. During my service, I’d grown accustomed to being called “Chief” and the title carries a lot of pride for me. A Navy Chief is seen as a fount of knowledge, a pillar of strength, a keeper of tradition, and an example of unwavering leadership. I wanted to continue that pride into my derby career. My number is the year that the rank of Chief Petty Officer was established in the Navy…1893.
How did you get started playing roller derby?
I’ve wanted to play roller derby since I was a young girl watching it on television. When I made the decision to leave the Navy and move to Las Vegas, SCRG was one of the first contacts I made.
How long have you been skating?
I grew up in rinks as a young person. However, I’ve only been playing roller derby since May 2012. Derby is the first and only sport I’ve ever played. And I love it!
What is your favorite derby position to play?
What is your greatest derby achievement so far?
Getting drafted to the Flying Aces! I love every member of the team, current and former. I’m so proud to skate with such a talented, classy group of ladies.
What is your favorite part of skating with Sin City Rollergirls?
The camaraderie. One of the things I feared most about leaving the military was losing the sense of community that it affords. The friendships, the common experiences. Derby provides that for me in spades… 🙂
Do you have a derby crush? Who is it?
DVS Dicer and The Force. They are my Brad and Angelina. Power couple…so talented, so wonderful.
What is your day job?
I am a full time graduate student at UNLV (Marriage and Family Therapy). I work part time at a local inpatient psychiatric hospital.
Who is the biggest influence in your life?
Currently, my teammates and my amazing partner Jennifer are my biggest influences. They keep my mind right and provide the most consistent love and support. I am supremely blessed.
What is the strangest thing in your purse or wallet right now?
Since I don’t carry either, I have to defer to my school bag. Strangest thing…a EOS lip balm that is totes melted (Yay Vegas summers!)…but it’s my fave and I can’t seem to let it go.
Tell us one thing about yourself that we wouldn’t expect…
I can’t get enough of super spicy food (have participated in several food competitions), strong coffee (quad shots, always), and bitter beer (super hoppy imperial IPAs are my fave). Love big and bold flavors.
