Beretta Garbo

What is the significance of your name and number?

I adore classic films from the 1930s to 1950s. These eras showed an absolute passion for film as an art and science. I refuse to watch modern movies and I maybe go to the movies once a year because it just depresses me. Nothing compares to the beauty, femininity, and talent of these eras.

Greta Garbo is one of my favorite actresses from the 1930s. She was both feminine and assertive. In roller derby, I feel that I can be strong, assertive, and talented and still show my femininity.

What is your athletic background?

I have been roller skating since I was 6-years-old and ice skating since 8-years-old. My dad and brother played ice hockey, but my sisters and I all had to figure skate instead. Combining my love for skating, with my need to finally play a full-contact sport, I found my perfect sport 16 years later. I helped form my hometown's team and skated with the Bellingham Roller Betties for five years.  Even though my parents thought I was nuts at first, they were my biggest supporters. My mom sewed my team's red, sparkly capes (Team FLASH), and my dad even coached in the early years of our league.

I moved to Las Vegas and eagerly tried out for and joined SCRG in 2012. I am so happy to have a home here with these awesome women.

What do you enjoy during your downtime? Outside interests?

I teach 4th grade so during the school year I have very little downtime, but when I do I love to run, read (mostly children's literature), clean house, cook, and play with my chihuahuas Gomez & Greta. During the summer I love to go home for several weeks to visit family, go on cruises, and get away from the heat of Vegas as much as possible.

Are there any life lessons that you’ve learned playing roller derby?

It wasn't until I started derby that I discovered my competitive streak. I always played individual sports like figure skating and cheerleading so I though I just wasn't a competitive person. Roller derby showed me quite quickly that I'm extremely competitive and play to win. I take bouts very seriously and treat the opposing team like true enemies on the track...until we win, then it's time to celebrate and be friends again.
